Ich möchte Euch heute die neusten musikalischen Überraschungen präsentieren, die ich in den letzten Tage erhalten habe und den Schöpfern dieser ein ganz ganz großes Dankeschön aussprechen. Das ist wirklich eine sehr große Bereicherung für mich und bringt Farbe in den grauen Alltag.
Eine der Hauptrollen in meiner Diplomarbeit spielt mein Freund Pascal aus Österreich, den ich vor fast neun Jahren im Urlaub kennengelernt habe. Er trug und trägt noch immer eine sehr große Verantwortung für meine musikalische Bildung. Auch er hat mal überlegt, welche Songs sein Leben maßgeblich geprägt haben, diese für mich auf CD gebrannt und sehr nette Geschichten dazu verfasst. Beim Hören dieser CD kommen auch bei mir sehr viele Erinnerungen auf. Eine schöne Mischung.

Today I wanna show you the latest musical surprises which I received recently and wanna shout out a big Thank You to the creators. It's always a big enrichment for my grey everyday life.
One of the leading parts in my diploma project goes to my friend Pascal from Austria, who I got to know like nine years ago on summer holidays. He was and still is responsible for my main musical development. He thought about which songs it would be that significantly shaped his life, burned them on CD for me and wrote some lovely stories for explanation. A great mix! ]


































Außerdem hat er noch eine Tracklist mit seinen aktuellen TopHits erstellt, die natürlich außerordentlich gut gelungen ist.

Meinen Freund Marco kenne ich noch aus Abizeiten und er ist eigentlich so ziemlich der einzige aus dieser Ära meines Lebens, mit dem ich regelmäßig in Kontakt stehe. Darüber bin ich auch sehr froh, da er – vor allem was musikalische Themenbereiche betrifft – doch ab und zu ein paar gute Gedanken freisetzt. Er hat eine fetzige Tracklist unter dem Motto "Elektro" zusammen gestellt, die mir den notwendigen Antrieb für die Endphase meiner Diplomarbeit geben soll. Das gelingt ganz gut. Vor allem bei Scooter kann mich nichts halten (Ankucken!). Auch das Artwork ist sehr überzeugend. An ihm ist schon ein kleiner Designer verloren gegangen.

[ During my highschool-time I hung out a lot with Marco and nowadays he's pretty much the only person from this time period who I'm in regular contact with. And I'm really glad about that because he often comes up with a lot of great ideas – especially concerning music. He made a mix under the motto "Electro" which shall give me the needful drive for the final stage of the project. It's working pretty well. Especially with Scooter I'm going crazy (Check this out!). Also Marco's art work is pretty convincing. He should become a cover designer! ]


































Eine sehr erfrischende Mix-CD habe ich von Marco Nummer zwei aus Gießen erhalten. Wir haben uns erst im vergangenen Dezember in der kuriosen Nacht des Kevin Devine-Konzerts in Gießen kennengelernt (ich berichtete im Post vom 17.12.2009). Er arbeitet da im MuK und ist selbst auch DJ und dementsprechend auch sehr fit, was Neuheiten in der Welt der alternativen Musik angeht. Seine CD konnte mir sehr viele neue Künstler bieten und ist von vorne bis hinten ein echter Ohrenschmaus (Uuh, was ein Wort!).

[ Marco number two from Gießen sent me a really invigorating Mix-CD. We got to know each other not so long ago in past december in this crazy night of the Kevin Devine-concert (I reported in my post of december 17th). Marco is working at the MuK and he's a DJ, too. So he's always up to date about the latest stuff in the alternative music scene. His CD showed me a lot of new artists and is a real ear candy (lovely word, huh?). ]

SEVEN.

Mein siebtes Poster zeigt den Ort, an dem ich mich wieder finde, wenn ich Sigur Rós höre und die Augen schließe. Hihi… Dieses Jahr gibt es leider nix von der Band zu sehen oder zu hören, da alle am Kinderkriegen sind. Aber Sänger Jónsi macht auch alleine echt verrücktes Zeugs (Webpage ankucken!) und ist damit in den USA unterwegs (für die, die grad zufällig da sind: Berkeley/San Francisco und auch Lawrence).

Morgen geb ich erstmal ein Stück Weisheit in Form von zwei Zähnen ab und hoffe, dass ich bald wieder fit bin, um weiter zu arbeiten. Ende März ist Zapfenstreich!

[ Poster number seven shows the place where I find myself when I'm listening to Sigur Rós and close my eyes. Haha… This year there won't be any new stuff released by the band because some of them are getting babies and such. But singer Jónsi is doing really crazy things all alone as well (check out his web page) and is also touring through the US (for those who are there at the moment: Berkeley/San Francisco and Lawrence).

Tomorrow I will lose some of my wisdom in the form of two teeth and hope I'll be fit again really soon to continue working on the project. It's due to the end of March! ]

NOW PLAYING.

Huhu. Wie angedroht, möchte ich heute mal einen kleinen Teil von den Sachen zeigen, die ich bisher gestaltet habe.
Zuvor nochmal eine kurze Erläuterung des Konzeptes meiner Diplomarbeit mit dem Titel "Now Playing" (bezogen auf die Anzeige auf Stereoanlagen, MP3- oder Mediaplayern auf dem Computer):
1. Hauptbuch:
12 Songs, die mir viel bedeuten (Tracklist siehe Post vom 16.Oktober 2009). Die Geschichten dazu erscheinen auf der Rückseite von je einem Poster (Format: 43x63cm, zusammengefaltet in einer Schutzhülle mit den Maßen 25x25cm), auf der Vorderseite gibt es jeweils eine Illustration, die sich auf meine persönlichen Assoziationen zum Song beziehen. Die Poster in den Hüllen werden in ein Buch eingebunden.
2. Buch "Artists":
Zusätzlich erscheint ein Buch, in dem ich die Interpreten der Songs vorstelle (Format: 25x25cm) mit diversen Infodaten, dem Werdegang und – falls vorhanden – Interviews, die ich geführt habe, und eigenen Konzertfotos.
3. Buch "Friends":
Die Freunde, die in den Geschichten zu den Songs auftauchen, werden in einem weiteren Buch gewürdigt (Format: 25x25cm). Hier kann man anhand von Interviews erfahren, was das für grandiose Menschen sind.
Für die drei Bücher gibt es dann so eine Art Schuber, auf dessen Vorderseite sich eine CD befindet, damit man die erwähnten Songs auch anhören kann, während man die Texte liest und Bilder anschaut.
In diesem Post nun die Motive der bisher gestalteten Plakate. Zur Gestaltungslinie gehört es übrigens, dass ich jeweils Elemente aus dem Frontmotiv entnehme und diese für die Gestaltung der dazugehörigen Seiten in den Büchern "Artists" und "Friends" einsetze. Das wird demnächst demonstriert.
Für Kritik und gute Ratschläge bin ich immer offen und dankbar (solang sie konstruktiver Natur sind, SCHNACKLER!).

[ Hey. As threatened, I wanna show some of the stuff I designed so far today.
But at first let me explain the concept of my diploma project again real quick. Its title will be "Now Playing" like the indication on displays of stereos, mp3-players or media players on a computer.
1. Main book:
12 songs, which are very important to me (see tracklist in the post of 16th October 2009). The stories which I connect with them will appear on the backside of one poster each (size: ca. 17''x25'', folded in a plastic pocket with the size of ca. 10''x10''). The frontside of those posters shows an illustration which refers to my individual associations to the song. The plastic pockets with the posters will be binded in a book.
2. book "Artists":
Furthermore there will be a book (size: ca. 10''x10'') which introduces the musicians of the chosen songs with some info data, their work history and – if existing – interviews I've conducted with them and concert pictures I've taken.
3. book "Friends":
In a third book (size: ca. 10''x10'') I pay tribute to the friends which appear in the stories I told. Here one can read an interview with them and see how great those people are!
The three books will be boxed in some kind of slipcase and come with a CD with the 12 songs. So one can listen to the music while reading the stories and interviews and looking at the pictures.
Shown in this post are the posters I've made so far. According to my design concept I take elements from the front picture of the poster and use them for the design of the associated pages in the books "Artists" and "Friends". I will show some of those soon.
I'm open and thankful for useful critique and advice.

ANOTHER ONE.

Und wie ich da so gestern Nacht hier die Fotos der bisher erhaltenen Musik-Geschenke hochlud, war das nächste schon auf dem Weg und heute in meinem Briefkasten. Ein weiteres Meisterwerk von Robert aus Winnipeg mit vielen kanadischen Perlen. Das Present hat diesen Tag gerettet, der so grau und verpeilt begann. Danke, Robert!

[ When I wrote this last post yesterday night the next musical present was on its way. It reached me today in the mailbox – another great Mix-CD from Robert (the Winnipeg-guy) with a lot of awesome canadian bands. It really made my day which started so grey and confusing. Thanks, Robert! ]

THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC 2009.

Nun erstmal ein frohes neues Jahr, Ihr Guten.
Ich bin vielleicht ein bisschen spät dran, aber dennoch möchte ich Euch meinen speziellen Jahresrückblick 2009 nicht vorenthalten. Und zwar bezieht dieser sich ausschließlich auf die Mixtapes und -CDs, die ich seit Beginn meiner Diplomphase Ende August erhalten habe. (Erinnert ihr Euch an meinen Aufruf nach Inspirations-Musik? Siehe rechts!) Der Ertrag ist sehr überschaubar, deswegen an dieser Stelle: Ja, ich arbeite noch immer an meinem Diplom und ja, ihr dürft mir noch immer Musik zur Inspiration schicken. Nur zu!
Eine ganz tolle Mix-CD habe ich ja bereits im Post vom 29.November vorgestellt – Robert aus Winnipeg hat mir die 10 Songs auf eine CD gespielt, die ihm am meisten bedeuten.
Im Oktober habe ich ein virtuelles Mixtape erhalten. Markus aus Dresden, der so lustig redet, hat einen wirklich grandiosen Musikgeschmack. Hier die Tracklist mit dazugehörigen You-Tube-Links:

Although I'm a little too late I wanna present you my special review of 2009. I will concentrate on Mixtapes and - CDs I've received since I started working on my diploma in the end of August. (Remember my call for inspiring music? See at the right!) It's a pretty low yield for 2009. So again: I'm still working on my diploma and you are still more than welcome to send me music for inspiration!
Robert from Winnipeg gave me a very nice Mix-CD. I showed it in my post from November 29th. He recorded these 10 songs which are very important for him.

Um die Weihnachtszeit erhielt ich von meiner allerliebsten Freundin Andrea ein musikalisches Present. Es ist kein Mixtape im herkömmlichen Sinne, da es sich um eine Liedauswahl von zwei ihrer derzeitigen Lieblingsmusiker handelt, aber dennoch ist die Hülle wirklich entzückend gestaltet.

Einer der treusten meiner Mixtape-Freunde ist Constantin. Auch zu Weihnachten wartete sein persönlicher Soundtrack of 2009 in meinem Briefkasten auf mich.

KEVIN DEVINE AND THE GODDAMN BAND.

KEVIN DEVINE IN CONCERT.

Huhu.
Da bin ich mal wieder. War gestern auf dem Kevin Devine-Konzert in Gießen, um ihn dann auch für meine Arbeit zu interviewen. Muss ich es nochmal sagen? Kevin ist ein unglaublich toller Musiker und Mensch, auch wenn nicht alle meine Euphorie nachempfinden können. Sein neues Album "Brother's Blood" ist definitiv eher ein Band-Album als eine Singer-Songwriter-Geschichte, da es doch recht durchkomponiert ist. Aber auch akustisch machen die neuen Lieder einiges her und die alten sowieso. Auch passte die reine Gitarrenuntermalung eindeutig besser zur gestrigen Weihnachtsatmosphäre im bestuhlten MuK in Gießen mit Glühwein, Plätzchen und Kerzenlicht. Die Leute im MuK waren auch super nett zu mir. Danke nochmal an Euch. Der Abend nahm dann noch eine unerwartete Wendung, aber das erzähle ich denjenigen, die es interessiert, lieber persönlich (huuuuu, Spannung!). Hier nun erstmal wieder eine kleine Diaschau mit Auszug aus dem Interview: Kevin über "Write Your Story Now" – den Song, den ich für meine Arbeit ausgewählt habe.
Tipp: Im Februar/März kommt Kevin nochmal mit Band nach Deutschland!!!

[Hey folks.
Here I am again. Went to the concert of Kevin Devine in Gießen yesterday for doing an interview with him for my project. Do I have to mention it again? Kevin is an incredibly great musician and person, even if not all of my friends can share this euphoria with me. Since his new album "Brother's Blood" is totally through-composed it's definitely more a band-album than a singer-songwriter-thing. But even acoustically the new songs are awesome, and the old ones anyway. Also, the acoustic-mood matched definitely better with yesterday's christmas-atmosphere in the MuK in Gießen with seats, hot wine, cookies and candles. The people at the MuK were super nice to me. Thanks again to them! The night took an unexpected turn. But I would prefer to tell it personally to those of you, who wanna here the story (wohoo, excitement!). For now you'll get to see a little slide show and hear an extract from the interview: Kevin about "Write Your Story Now" – the song I picked for my project.
Tip: In february/march Kevin will come back to Germany with his band!

SURPRISE IN THE MAILBOX.

Da ist was, was ich hier noch zeigen wollte, da es wirklich eines der nettesten Geschenke war, die ich in letzter Zeit erhalten hab. Inspiriert von meinem Konzept hat Robert aus Winnipeg (den ich im letzten Post erwähnt habe) die zehn Songs auf eine CD gebrannt, die sein Leben maßgeblich geprägt haben und ein kleines Booklet mit den dazu gehörigen Geschichten gebastelt. Lustige und herzerweichende, sehr schön geschrieben. Und die Illustrationen erst! Ich sollte das als mein Diplom abgeben. Danke nochmal, Robert.

[ There's something I wanna show here since it was one of the loveliest presents someone gave me recently. Robert from Winnipeg (talked about him in my last post) got inspired from my concept and burned those ten songs on a CD which were and are very important for him in his life. He made a little booklet with all the related stories in it. Funny ones and really heart-melting ones. Very well done. And watch those illustrations! I should turn this in instead of my diploma project. Thanks again, Robert! ]

JOHN K. SAMSON IN CONCERT.

Es geht voran. Habe ein Design-Konzept, was alle Beteiligten einigermaßen zufrieden stimmt und muss nun produzieren. Nebenbei läuft noch immer Materialsammlung. Gestern zum Beispiel war ich in Frankfurt beim John K. Samson-Konzert, was der Sänger der Weakerthans ist. Die tauchen ja auch in meiner Tracklist auf, so dass ich die Gelegenheit nutzte, John ein paar Fragen zu stellen. Sehr sympathisches Bürschlein. Ich habe alles aus meinem I-Movie herausgeholt und eine kleine Diapräse mit Konzertfotos und einem Ausschnitt aus dem Interview zusammengebastelt. John über die Bedeutung des von mir auserwählten Liedes "Left And Leaving". Zustimmendes Glucksen meinerseits im Hintergrund. Zudem war da noch ein Junge, Robert, der mich wegen Fotos ansprach. Es stellte sich heraus, dass er aus der Heimatstadt der Weakerthans, Winnipeg/Kanada, kommt und gerade in Deutschland studiert. Er hat drei Videos vom Konzert hochgeladen: "Plea From A Cat Named Virtute", "The Last And" und "Confessions Of A Futon-Revolutionist".

[ There is some progress. I finally have a design concept, which most of the participants are pretty much okay with. At the same time material gattering is going on. Yesterday for example I went to Frankfurt to see John K. Samson, who is the singer of The Weakerthans. They are on my tracklist and so I took the opportunity to ask John some questions. A decent fellow. I did my best in I-Movie (with all the crazy effects) and created the following slide show with some of my concert pics and an extract from the interview. John about the meaning of "Left And Leaving" – the song I've chosen. Me affirmative chuckling in the background. Also, there was a boy on the concert – Robert. We talked about photography and it turned out that he is from Winnipeg/Canada (the hometown of the Weakerthans) and studying abroad in Germany at the moment. He videotaped these songs: "Plea For A Cat Named Virtute", "The Last And" and "Confessions Of A Futon-Revolutionist". ]

INTERVIEWS.

Bin am Basteln, Schneiden, Kleben, Scannen, alles Mögliche ausprobieren. Und wieder verwerfen! Bevor ich mich nicht richtig für ein Designkonzept entschieden habe, möchte ich lieber noch nix zeigen.
Stattdessen mal wieder ein paar Konzerthinweise:
John K. Samson, der Sänger der Weakerthans, ist auf Tour durch Deutschland. Die ersten fünf Gigs als Support für Kettcar und dann noch weitere sechs Konzerte solo. Leider sind schon fast alle Konzerte ausverkauft. So auch das in Frankfurt (für mich am nächsten) am 13.11. Dank der netten Jungs von Grand Hotel Van Cleef jedoch darf ich dem John nun trotzdem an diesem Tag ein paar Fragen stellen und ihn mir dann auch anschauen. Danke! Desweiteren kommt Kevin Devine nach Deutschland, dessen neues Album "Brother's Blood" wieder sehr gut gelungen ist. Und zwar im Dezember dorthin.
Wer mich kennt, weiß, dass ich die Qualiät eines Jahres rückblickend nach der Anzahl besuchter Kevin Devine-Konzerte bewerte. Deswegen ist es für mich eine große Ehre, auch ihn am 16.12. in Gießen interviewen zu dürfen. Vielen Dank an Melt!Booking.

Instead of this here are the latest concert news:
Weakerthans' singer John K. Samson is touring through Germany soon. Almost all gigs are sold out. But the boys from the German label Grand Hotel Van Cleef made it possible that I can meet him before his gig in Frankfurt on 13th November and ask him some questions. And then watch him playing of course. Thanks again! That's great.
Also, Kevin Devine will come to Germany in December to this places. He's done a quite good job again with his latest record "Brother's blood". People who know me know that I evaluate the quality of a year according to the number of Kevin Devine-concerts. So it's a great honor to interview him for my project on 16th December in Gießen.
